So what level medical facility is this? I remember killing time at Ft. Bliss going through equipment lists for med units ... at some level (above aid stations)BEER was standard equipment, our 91C said it was for urinary infections.
Can we upgrade?

Do this Doc. Open that list you retyped. If you can see it, as text, hit ctrl+a which will highlight the whole page. Then hit ctrl+c which will copy all of it.

Then start an email to me, and in the body of the letter, put your cursor on the first line and hit ctrl+v... which will `paste` the list right into the letter. Hit send, yer done.

Not only is it easier, it`s way more, it`s a database for real.

We can make any partiucular requests from a database, such as:

`List all medics in the database where the unit is C/1/501.`

Bingo, you`d get a complete list of all Charlie Company 1st 501st Infantry...nuttin` but.

Hey, before I forget, get the format right for the ``assigned to`` unit.

B/1/501
B/1/502
B/2/501 ...etc.

Someone might later ask you:

``My uncle/buddy/dad was a medic in vietnam but I don`t know what unit. His name was Jerry Woods.``

Database query: List all info on any medic in the database where the last name is Woods.

Results:

Jerry `Doc` Woods 3rd plt B/1/502 KIA 11/12/69.
Allan `Doc` Woods LRRP Team `67 `68 awoods@yahoo.com

That`s just a hypothetical, but uh....like that. Databases are extremely usefull, and you now gots one. Anyone who ``signs in`` will be added to the database automatically, the ones you list ...will be added by you! All the same database, and we (I) can edit that database anytime, to add or fix errors. My edits will show up instantly, so yeah, better to maintain, better to start with, better all around.

You`ll see, I`m sure, in time.

DUD,

Thanks for visiting the Geronimo`s Medicine Men website. I have designed the site to be our website, not mine - for instance, I would like to have your photo to post and a bit about you and your tour. My experience as a medic changed my entire life. When I returned from RVN I went to work in a local hospital, then decided to go to nursing school (I was passed over for a P.A. program, but that`s another story related to PTSD symptoms I was suffering at the time). I always enjoyed my military experience, but not the rejection from the public at the time (you remember, I am sure). When Gulf I started, the public was very supportive, so I joined the National Guard. As listed on the website, I have since done active duty for the LA Riots, LA Earthquake and a humanitarian mission to Panama. The mobilization I am on now was involuntary (I was called up), however knowing what I know now, I would have volunteered. I am back doing the thing I enjoy most, taking care of soldiers ! ! !

Happy Holidays.

thanks boss, I feel like I`m learning something here.
So up the road all the rosters will become data bases to check out.
Sometimes the info I get its pretty skimpy.Much details are left out.for example the 166 eagles on the wall.I downloaded a hard copy of those names.Problem is they don`t list them by unit.Only date and name.
Same samw in some other sites I`m on like NAMC docs.
only list names of members (ALL DOCS) BUT NO UNITS OR DATES.I have two lists quite long on medics sent in by good intending but no way to verify them.so been holding them back and checking them against our lists and guys requests. doc

You da man.
I was afraid I f--ked it up again.

Re: medic bunker

Name: MO
Subject: Re: medic bunker

Leave the particular info (dates, unit) out if you don`t have it.

Later someone will tell ya what unit ``Doc Rogers`` was in, but not if they don`t see his name.

Even without units or dates, the name, nickname, KIA, kia date, etc. info is still useful.

I can add different qualities, ets, rank, weapon, basic, AIT, and on... If and when you need them.

Any quality can be hidden from the displayed results...like phone number, street address...comments, PS,...

Soon, I will change the ORDER of the results list you see on the page. For instance, I might ORDER it by EMAIL, and then living active medics can be separated from the ones we left behind... if that is how you want your results displayed.

I guess the beauty of a database is in the variety of ways you can (if you want) display collected information...name date unit namdates etc. Also how you can HIDE certain parts (SOC Number for shure!)

The resulting list can be; just last names and states...even though you have more info than that.

I know I`m goin` deep on ya, but Dud or somebody might pick up ont it. Guy perhaps. I really do think a database of (any) nam medics would be quite useful now and in the future.

Once you understand the above, you might ask me to `...list the results by platoon` or, `list the results page by MedUnit.` (326th), or eventually....

List all medics by unit, just listing the info: namdate, firstname, nickname and lastname...

Or Guy might want a list of just any 502nd medics...nothing else, including only name and email. Piece of cake.

List all medics with the lastname of Jones

List all medics where `unit` B/1/501

List only Name, Rank, and Unit for all medics, ORDER by Unit.

Right now, I think I have the list displayed like this:

List all info for all medics, Order by lastname, in reverse.

...it`s like that.

got it. mjr has a font size of 12 and it`s gotta be bigger. when i use dreamweaver, my font size choices go from 1-7 and from -1 to -7. in wordpad the font size numbers are different. they start at 10 and go up. you use 4(for text) and 6(for headers) as your font size on b/1/501 roster and mjr has it at 12(for text) and its too small. is their some kinda system to follow? its a simple fix for me, but i think thats where mjr made the font too small. i use dreamweaver font sizes and you do too. i use 4 on all my pages. i`m not confused. i know what to do, but i was curious. later, dud

Subject: Glad you asked...

There are at least a hundred lines of baloney added to the top part. All those gotta go. MJR knows...I think. He didn`t actually add those lines...his word processor dunnit. That is exactly why ``Notepad`` is best for editing. It adds nothing.
Re: Glad you asked...

ok. i knew something happened, cus the code looked fucked up and i know mjr wouldnt mess up, cus hes done a real good job for a long time. now, this aint a dumb question, so dont go laughing. is wordpad the same as notepad or similar? i have both, but notepad wont open for me. i dont wanna go screw stuff up, so i`m asking beforehand. and i dont wanna piss off the boss! we`ll leave that to ol` doc dave. sorry doc! later, dud
Re: Glad you asked...

Good question. Wordpad and Notepad are not the same. Notepad is so bare bones text it almost doesn`t qualify as a word processor like Wordpad, Works, Word, Word6 etc.

Notepad is more of an editing program. What you see is what you get. Nothing added, filtered, or encoded with bullshit Microsoft code stuff.

That code stuff is useful of course for sending good looking paper printouts all paragraphed out nicely and with colored print and a nice logo etc, but not for web page editing.

I got a training project for you. See if you can find and download..Putty (telnet). It`s a secure way to adjust/edit web work without even using a browser (till you want to check your work).

I think you could hanl it easy.

....and it`s free!

Think of it as a little Linux system, cause once you get it down, Linux is pie, not that you need to know Linux.

I like to see all 101st medics out of Sally listed.
KIA`s are a must..everytime we read their names they`re alive again in our memories.
Same for the guys who`ve died since then.
Those of us still here should be listed `cause we need all the help we can get remembering who`s who.
Then add Bandaids from other Sally units if there`s room.
Does it make sense to put the roster on several pages (1/501 on one, 2/501 on another, etc)?

Being on the ground floor ... does that mean I get squished at the bottom of the pile... there`s a plumbers rule of thumb, `Stink goes up, shit goes down.`

It`s the medical version of full automatic and a 30 round magazine. Line `em up and mow `em down. Too much hassle to set up if you need to stick 1 or 2 people.

Or maybe they found out they didn`t work as well as they thought.

Or maybe it was too much fun to crank up the air pressure, shoot the vaccine through the patient, across the room and into a target taped to the wall. (I never got to use one ...maybe they didn`t trust me?)

Or maybe I`m suffering from Male Answering Syndrome- (The compulsion to provide an answer even if you have no idea what you`re talk

I used the air guns at Fort Knox and never saw an injury. Injuries were caused by lazy medics - it is not the patients responsibility to make sure they are not injured (such as leaning in, etc)! If the medic HOLDS the back side of the arm they are injecting with one hand and operates the gun with the other hand, no injuries. Lasy medics sit on a stool and use a one handed technique - if the patient moves an injury any occur. I will do a bit of online research to see if the air gun remains in use.

Holiday Depression

Subject: Holiday Depression

Dave,

Most likely, the holidays are increasing your stress/PTSD/depression symptoms. This happens to most depressed people around the holidays. One of my current patients, who ran over some children in Iraq was seriously considering suicide at Thanksgiving. His VA social worker spotted the problem and had him admitted in the hospital for an emergency overnight stay.

I suggest the book, `How To Stubbornly Refuse To Make Yourself Miserable About Anything, Yes Anything` by Dr. Albert Ellis (the grandfather of cognitive behavioral therapy) and increase visits to mental health during the holidays.

See below for more holiday stress information.

Doc Lamunyon

=================================================

Holiday Depression & Stress
The holiday season is a time full of joy, cheer, parties, and family gatherings. However, for many people, it is a time of self-evaluation, loneliness, reflection on past failures, and anxiety about an uncertain future.

fact sheet index

What Causes Holiday Blues?
Many factors can cause the “holiday blues”: stress, fatigue, unrealistic expectations, over-commercialization, financial constraints, and the inability to be with one’s family and friends. The demands of shopping, parties, family reunions, and house guests also contribute to feelings of tension. People who do not become depressed may develop other stress responses, such as: headaches, excessive drinking, over-eating, and difficulty sleeping. Even more people experience post-holiday let down after January 1. This can result from disappointments during the preceding months compounded with the excess fatigue and stress.
Coping with Stress and Depression During the Holidays

Keep expectations for the holiday season manageable. Try to set realistic goals for yourself. Pace yourself. Organize your time. Make a list and prioritize the important activities. Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. Do not put entire focus on just one day (i.e., Thanksgiving Day) remember it is a season of holiday sentiment and activities can be spread out (time-wise) to lessen stress and increase enjoyment.
Remember the holiday season does not banish reasons for feeling sad or lonely; there is room for these feelings to be present, even if the person chooses not to express them.
Leave “yesteryear” in the past and look toward the future. Life brings changes. Each season is different and can be enjoyed in its own way. Don’t set yourself up in comparing today with the “good ol’ days.”
Do something for someone else. Try volunteering some time to help others.
Enjoy activities that are free, such as driving around to look at holiday decorations; going window shopping without buying; making a snowperson with children.
Be aware that excessive drinking will only increase your feelings of depression.
Try something new. Celebrate the holidays in a new way.
Spend time with supportive and caring people. Reach out and make new friends or contact someone you have not heard from for awhile.
Save time for yourself! Recharge your batteries! Let others share responsibility of activities.

Med Journal

Name: MO
Subject: Med Journal

Doc I know that some sort of PDR can be found about anywhere, especially with the web.

I think though, that their stuff is written for doctors, and besides, they are usually stuffed with disclaimers by manufacturers. Even the TV advertisements are more precise about their disclaimers than whatever intended effects of their drugs. It seems to me like the deeper you research a drug the more confused you might get.

From a primary care doctors own mouth we`ve all heard `...that stuff isn`t important` when we speak any worry about the label warnings.

Incidentally, my father was killed by ignorant doctors and nurses mishandling medicines. I don`t trust jaded doctors who assume they are a greater level of `knowing` than their patients. I also don`t like any clouds of confusion about anything I ingest from food to medicines.

Anyway, I`d like to initiate a real trustworthy database just at least for all the PTSD meds that all the Namvets are eating like popcorn. Plain english, real (if not personal) experience, bro to bro, if you will.

With this attitude, I don`t mean to say screw the doctors and pharm companies. It`s just that, as you pointed out, their information based on lab research is readily available if you can read it, and all of it...doesn`t erase the fact that most medicines are gonna act different from person to person.

Lastly, and speaking of depression, I personally don`t think it should be overlooked that side effects of various medicines contribute heavily to depression...themselves! In other words, a vet on VA `care` might be more depressed than he was before he started taking all kinds of medications...because of those medications!

In the end I think vets might benefit by real deal information about meds, based on personal experience, and written in plain english.

Just as an example:

Long before I was taking any VA meds I noticed that Alka-Seltzer Cold Plus would pick me up for a few hours, from the drag effects of a cold (or hangover.) The same drug, put my wife to sleep in 15 minutes.
(That was before they took it off the market, changed the mix, and reintroduced it later.)

My point is, whatever the label or the doctor or PDR would say....they wouldn`t tell you THAT!

Looking ahead, if you and others would contribute to a no bullshit database about PTSD standardlly drugs prescribed by the VA, it would be the first place I would look whenever I was prescribed a new med.

That is the ungarnished reason for the Sally Medics Medicine Journal.
med stats

Name: docdave
Subject: med stats

All medics trained get a standardized course in drugs,
that is nation wide and referenced by the same books.
The books of AMA acredibility are:current up to date PDR.(PHYSICIANS DESK REFERENCE);a Tabor`s encyclepedia,
a Merc`s manual, and a Gray`s anatomy. These are the bibles are medics in the USA use.
When I was working in Burbank calif. some of the guys at the cafe asked me about things like `yellow jackets,
Whites, bennies,black beauties,and purple somethings.
I had to say I don`t know what they are.If they are not in my PDR then I don`t know them.Street names, slang
names and civilian stories are not listed in my medical training.I am still looking for a gizzard.
Some of the home rememdies people know better than medicos. For instance MO`s example I never heard till now. However I have heard of alka seltzer being used for hangovers headaches and to stop diarreah
Chiropractors, and homeopaths believe heavily in vitamins ndsupplements.Perhaps because they are not trained or licensed in pharmicuticals?
Every one reacts differently to drugs. Many have allergic reactions to some.Sometimes meds have the opposite effect.dosages also differ from one person to another. One thing is certain is to stay in close touch with your doctor who issues you meds.He depends on feedback from you to see if they are working correctly.
There is a physcological factor at work also.If you trust your doctor and believe in him, then probably therapy will go well;on the other hand if you don`t trust your doctor or any doctor for that matter there will probably be trouble with your getting well.A
joke in med school is that a dcotor is only as good as his library. Its important to stay up to date as new things come out all the time. The latest thing is a rash of normone drugs to secrete items believed to not be workong or slowing due to age. Also blockers and thinners, all aree for specific reasons to speed up or slow down the bodies natural secretions.A lot is being done now in brain chemistry they didn`t undetand a few years ago.The pituitary, pineal combinations along with the thalamic connections are now being addressed.
Depression is now a chemical imbalance in the brain.
Ptsd was only recognized and accepted as a disease in the mid 80`s.Medicine is growing and maturing all the time. Many new things are being treated and accepted for disability that wasn`t just 10 years ago.
PTSD is now being defined as a `normal reaction to an abnormal event`.More to follow later. doc

Doc I checked your site and would be happy to link to it completely as is, cause you`ve done a great job. I don`t like the advertising at the top, and I know you don`t either. You probably can`t control that, I understand cause I went through that with Yahoo. I forced the add banner to the bottom of the page...stuff like that, in the end that`s why I paid for a site... so I COULD control the advertising completely, get rid ot it, and feature the sites content instead.

If for no other reason that just so you`ll have a back-up of all your stuff, I`m thinking of maybe storing a copy of your site, here at lzsally.com. I guess technically they would refer to that as a ``mirror`` site. Anyway, then there wouldn`t be any add banners at the top of all your web pages. There would at YOUR site at bizhosting, but MY links to YOUR pages would have NO advertising. And sure, I would make it so you could edit your pages 24/7.

There are some variables to play with.

I could ``park a sub directory``. That would make your web address (the mirror one that is here) as something like... ``http://nammedics.lzsally.com``

Or I could go the other way...

http://lzsally.com/nammedics

[replace `nammedics` with any one word name you chose]

...which is like the sally medics is currently, and just have a link to you...on all the sally/med pages.

I just need to know whether to think further on this issue, or drop the idea. If you absolutely love the bizhosting add banner, I`ll just link to you as asked, but I`ll bet you`d feel a lot better not having to look at Intel Pentium, Earthlink advertisements.

Wow, the site really does look great without all the banners/ads/annoying popups. As you may know, Bizhosting is one of many `free` hosting sites. The price you pay is all the annoying ads.

As an AOL user, I am somewhat desensitized to these ads. I pay more than all other IPS users and have to look at ads on every page - I have just learned to ignore them.

If you begin a mirror of my site here, how will it work for updates/changes? For instance, I hope to collect many more medic photos.

The total size is about 5 megs displayed. Maybe not all of the pages are of interest to LZ Sally visitors who are not former Geronimo`s.

Let me have your responses to my thoughts.

Happy Holidays to all ! ! !

PS: I will reply more quickly to direct email - I check messages several times per day, but only visit several times per week.
101 Medics on the Wall

Name: Doc L
Subject: 101 Medics on the Wall

Some time ago I asked the guy who runs 1st Cav Medic (a great website) if he had the names of medics KIA by unit/organization. He was unable to provide that information. The material listed for the digital wall is partial and I gave up looking for 1/501 medics (I am still trying to find the names of all the 1/501 medics KIA to put on my website).

I have just begun the Army Command and General Staff school (needed for promotion to LTC) by distance learning and it is going to take up lots of my time. This would be a great project for a motivated former medic.

New Book

Subject: New Book

Where most doctors out there today are inspired more by money...than you guys were, can I have a a-men?

Well then you guys work was more driven by true compassion @ 50 cents an hour per diem.

Don`t get too all pumped up. You guys didn`t go to ``work`` that often, but my point is wierdly woven in there somewhere. I wish to bring up the subject of pain & cure with no consideration at all for money, so what better audience than you guys --- who didn`t have money in you equation from the start.

I`ll give you an example of a situation in which the subject (patient) was me, the year was 1978, the symtoms were that I was addicted to Coricidin spray (could`nt guarantee breathing through my nose without it) I always had two bottles and a spare.

Miracle cure! One treatment! GOne Forever!!!

I read in a book on natural potions, about someone who had the same symptoms and cured it...! I read (red) on.

The concoction:

Tools & Ingredients;
Eye dropper, shot glass, water, garlic clove (fresh) and a garlic press. (Kitchen tool)

Mash/press the medium/large garlic clove into the shot glass.

Add water 3/4ths up to full.

Stir the mixture well, and wait a few minutes till all the sludge (garlic parts) sink to the bottom.

[I mention this part, because I think it was important to know, and for the patient think about while waiting for the solids to separate from the liquid. This is NOT gonna be fun. Even it the book where I read of this, the author mentioned that the ``procedure`` should be repeated three times (over a week or something.) Anyway, he never got to dose 2. I didn`t either. Fortunatly, one dose, cured forever! (so far). On the other hand, when I administered the cure, the immediate sensation was quite shocking, and I was a walking clove of garlic for I think, a couple/few days. That`s the price. If that`s ok, continue]

Fill an eyedropper with the clearest liquid in the shot glass. Tilt your head all the way back and squirt the liquid directly into a nostril of your choice. Repeat for the other...you`re done. You might cry, gag, see colors, or smack your mamma in the next minute or two, but I did it, and the symtoms (I`m knocking wood) never returned. (27yrs?)

hey guy.
I heard of medics in nam, that had worse cures than that.
After a while we said, any cure that works is a good cure.
I remember running an IV over a guys eye with clear
water to flush out the reminants of a bug attack.

Weeks without a shower, sweating in the boonies..not having a sense of smell would be a blessing.
Although as I recall, after a couple days you didn`t notice it.
Several days later you noticed it again.
That`s when you knew it was bad....

Yer right doc, every time your sinuses would clear,
you get a whiff of viet nam.Remember the first time off the freedom bird? That first smell hit us an it never really went away, we just got used to it.
When I got home from nam I used to take three or four showers everyday, I could still smell it in my pores and was afraid everyone else could smell it too.My wife thoght I was crazy.
Also, I used to flush the toilet three or four times just to hear it flush.MY wife used to shake her head at me.
Its amazing all the little things from home you miss when you get back, like turning on the lites.

I found my training at Fort Sam prepared me well for my job. At present I have a Master`s degree in Nursing Science, but learned most of what I use daily at Fort Sam. A flashlight with the red lense really helps to assess and treat wounded a night. I have posted some medic reference materials of the Geronimo Medics website, including current training materials - check it out if you are interested in current medic training:

Sorry about that. I did (though) mention that I have this shack set up to expire every 30 says. Unfortunately, the ``auto-rebuild`` leaves off a couple important lines at the end. Posts don`t work then. It`s ok, I can fix it manually, but it`s all-l because of that 30 day expiraration option. Since I can do THAT TOO manually, I will just set this shack not to expire at all. (..till one of you guys tells me it`s full and slow.)
OK?

Hey, I think I`ll start a med survey... something like the one in the day room...only medical...and put it in here somewhere. Remind me!

[EXAMPLE]
multiple choice:
Question: which of these fits you best.
a. I`m taking meds that don`t seem to have any effect.

b. I`m not taking meds meds prescribed to me.

c. I`m not taking any prescribed meds.

END OF EXAMPLE

Hey Doc Guy? Lemme do that mirror thing now. Just tell me (again) which files or pages should be here.
Re: Med survey

Thanks big guy for fixing our binker chat room again.
On the survey thing I would say (A) would be the closeest but not accurate. That is I am taking lots of meds for a variety of things.I have to say I have to say I am better with them than without them.But----
they are not perfect and I can still get messed up with them. The big thing for me is I have something (meds) to deal with probs, and with out I have nothing.I reccomend taking them and bugging the doc to get the right prescription that works the best.
In other words be persistant that you want his help,
and he needs feedback if they are effecting you good or bad. There are usually several choices of meds for anything and adjusting the dosage is important.I
know it is frustrating and its hard to be patient about this and just throw the dam things in the toilet.Tell the doctor that is how you feel,he
needs to hear the truth. My opinion for what its worth .

I`m an `A` too.
In my case it`s for cholesterol, before my LDL was 80 and HDL was 39... after 6 months my LDL was 80 and my HDL was 37.
Our new health plan requires my Doc to call them for a pre-authorization before they`ll pay for it...so he called and they sent me a form letter telling me that the prescription requires my Doc to call them for a pre-authorization before.... and you know where this is going....so I said screw it.

I know the hassle you speak of doc.
I get it too.The damm pharmicy keeps changing the drugs to cheaper and generic to save dough.
The refill forms are getting like rolls of toilet paper.I take them in a stack at a time and tell them to mail them.
I know a couple vets that got warnings for not taking
their meds. They said if they didn`t follow the treatment it must mean they are ok and don`t need help.So now they throw them away and don`t say anything to anybody.

You can`t triage your patients when they are so far apart and you are being fired at.NOt practical.Ya got to get to the ones you can reach first. Not feeling enough skilled is a returning problem to medics.
What if I was a little faster, or a little smarter, or did I leave anything out?Stuff like that. And did the guys hate me for sending them home alive but crippled?
How come aI survived and some of them didn`t, is another good one doc.I go thru it too.
Someone suggested a ptsd group for just medics.
I think thats a good idea, what do you think?
