Mike Henry : D Trp 1/1 Cav : 1968/1969 sitrep... The purpose of this note is to thank John Conroy and others for helping me and my co-pilot on 18 May, 1969. We were on a recon mission severl K's west of Tam Ky when some 51's caught us in a cross fire. My front seater, Cpt Leo J. Huber was killed instantly; my cyclic was shot out, but by the grace of God, was able to land the aircraft. I suffered significant sharpnel wounds and was forced to make an emergency landing at Tam Ky. Upon landing, John and others could see that we were shot up and needed assistance. He and others provided immediate first aid to Cpt Huber but I am very certain he was killed instantly. After shutting down the aircraft, I was helped from the aircraft and loaded onto a Huey that just happened to be in the area. I was fighting shock at the time and had to concentrate on self control so that I would not black out or vomit. I had my eyes closed during the extraction and do not remember the faces. A sincere "Thank you" goes out to all who helped on that day. On behalf of Cpt Huber, thank you also for your efforts in assisting him, for your dedicated service during difficult times, and for serving our country in the best manner possible. I have replayed the "memory tape" of 18 May, 1969 many times over during the past forty plus years and feel awful that a good soldier had to die on that day in service to his country. Again, thanks to all for your timely and meaningful efforts so many years ago. May good health and clear skies be with you all.

I remember the lights at night along the railroad tracks outside the perimeter. We lit that area up all the time. I bet they got tired of fixing the railroad tracks. Monsoon there was a mess! We left in late February 1970 and moved to the Phu Bai Airstrip due to enemy threat.

Steve Johnson : 2nd Plt., 265th RRC : 67 to 69 sitrep... I was on the original team to secure LZ El Paso (Camp Eagle) and the original team to secure LZ Sally in Jan, 1968. After Securing LZ El Paso, then LZ Nancy, we did the LZ Sally thing. We were one of the few RRC Units in Vietnam to all qualify as 11Bravos and all of us received the CIB. Pretty unusual for Army Security Agency types.

Bob "RC" Henningsen : Co C, 2cd of 501 : Oct '69-June '70 sitrep... I was awarded 100,000 Basic Trainee at Ft. Lewis in '68...graduated OCS Infantry (OC-63) but refused a commission...went to VN as E-1 then to the jungle and served as Plt Leader's RTO (Lt. Hargrave)...then squad leader about the time when Lt. Sullivan replaced Hargrave...we humped Bastogne AO then to Ripcord and Gladiator area...there is a book out "Ripcord" that puts our contribution in perspective. Paul Carson from Iowa was KIAed and later several more including Lt. Sullivan was killed doing this battle for Ripcord.

MARC SMILEN : not a veteran : n/a sitrep... I collect letters and diaries. I have the LZ Sally letters sent home by 101st Air Cav. tower controller Hank Stein. Can anybody help me with the following? Stein wrote to his girlfriend about a friendy fire incident. A search and destroy patrol with four squads. Two squads on each side of a wooded area. Each pair of squads opened fire on the other two squads. Stein mentions a Sargeant Martain and a Sargeant Blackwell. Does anybody have any info on this incident?

His replacement RTO, Lawrence Hawley, Miami, Fl, was assigned to him on 2/7/69. On 2/8/69, a recon was sent east of LZSally. Larry was a cherry, in country 19 days. About 930 AM he stepped on a mine, and was killed . Your ex Cong scout also stepped on a mine, but it was a dud. Later that afternoon, FO Scharmen stepped on a mine, and he jumped down on the sand. He was not injured, but Donald Kipp was KIA, and one of your officers lost his foot. If anyone reads this and has any knowledge of Larry, or that day, please contact me. Welcome Home

Larry Phillips : Co. C 2nd/501st 2nd Battalion : Aug '68 to July '69 sitrep... I was Sgt Phillips Based at LZ Sally, frequently humped up Nui Ke Hill within site West of Sally. Spent 85% of time in mountains West of Sally. Short time on Hamburger Hill. Lost Tom Manderfeld a short time after he transfered from my platoon to another. He had a baby girl he never got to see. I noticed my name is not on the list. Lt. Kornegay was my last platoon leader when I left in mid '69. Lt. Kornegay was older NCO who went to OCS. If I sound familiar to anyone, contact me. I don't remember any names other than the ones I've mentioned. That age you know.

Don fulton : 2/265th RRU : '68-'69 sitrep... We were know as "Fred" to the operational units, and was wondering if there were other direction finders out there. We ran the SRDF equipment calling in the artillery and air support, it was fun but wouldn't want to go back. ;)

I worked with a good bunch a lot of them I don't remember names. I blanked it out until about 10 years ago. Was at Camp Eagle and Chu Lai. Was in field hospital for a while with Dysentary. We had good times and some bad times. We still have not recieved our due recognition yet. In my job I see a lot of homeless vets living under bridges and abanded cars. Lot don't want to talk.

I felt the need to say thank you, God bless you and welcome home. Last May 15 2004, my team and I left Whittier, Ca. on bicycles to go to Washington, D.C. to ask Congress and the President of the United States to create a day of recogniton for our Vietnam Veterans. Rep. Linda T. Sanchez has introduced H-Res 30 in the House, which calls for March 30, of every year to be recognized as Welcome Home Vietnam Vetrans Day. Now, there are dozens of co-sponsors to the bill, including Reps. Grace Napolitano and Loretta Sanchez, also from California. We need state reps from other states to pick up the ball and support the bill. I've spent five years and thousands of dollars (most of which I still owe), countless hours telephoning, faxing, e-mailing, letter-writing, lobbying, fund- raising and pushing those who had the power to make this happen. This bill, when passed, will show all our Veterans that no matter how long it takes, America's warriors are not forgotton. People who really care about Vietnam Veterans and about how they were ignored after returning home should call their representatives and ask them why their names are not on the bill as co-sponsors? This bill does not have political barriers, it does not ask for money, time off from work, parades or $50 bucks off at Wal-mart; all it says is that it is time to say thank you, God bless and welcome home to our Vietnam Veterans. My question is where is the name of your state rep? Why don't they support this bill? Call them today and ask them. We need to do it now before another Vietnam Veteran dies without hearing those words of gratitiude from a grateful nation. I have set up a Web site at www.whvvd.org On that site I have placed links to government offices, including the White House, Congress and the Senate. This March 30 has passed just like they have for the past four decades, and no one cared or showed any regard. The Vietnam Veteran, very much forgotton like the Korean War Veteran, will stand proudly on the sidelines waiting for America to recognize her true heroes. As founder and team coordinator for Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, I urge to to please help me in this "solo" campaign. I know I can't do it alone, I need your help, in every state of Union. I ask this as one American and as one Veteran to another. This is not just about the Vietnam Veteran. This is about America doing what is right.
